History / Biographical:
Lance Carey was born in 1945, grew up in North Vancouver, completed Grade 13 at North Vancouver Senior Secondary School in 1965, and that fall enrolled in the second year of B.A. program at the University of British Columbia, when he took up playing field hockey and rose to play on the first team, the Thunderbirds, by the fall of 1967. That same fall, he played his first international games against teams from New Zealand and Australia in Vancouver. Then he toured to Mexico with the Thunderbirds Team in May 1968. He graduated with a B.A. in History and Economics in 1969. In 1969-70, he took courses in physical education to allow him to teach Physical Education, and in 1970-71, he did a year of teacher training, during which he met his wife-to-be, Nancy Batie, with whom he was to enjoy a life in coaching field hockey. They were married on August 21st, 1971. In the summer of 1969, Lance Carey was a team member of the Hawks ’69 Australasian Tour that over two months played 38 games in seven countries winning 17 games, drawing 7, and losing 14, all in all an extensive beginning for Lance in international field hockey play, which he documented extensively, as he did for his future international play. From August 1972 until April 1974, Lance and Nancy lived in Melbourne, Australia, where they both taught school and where Lance joined and played for the Greensborough Field Hockey Club, which allowed his game and fitness to grow. In August 1973, Lance, his sister Paula, and Nancy took a trip to Cairns, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, and of which they kept a diary. Upon his return to Canada in the spring of 1974, Lance rejoined the Canadian Field Hockey Team’s Training Squad, had six weeks as a substitute teacher at Tecumseh Elementary in Vancouver, and was then offered a permanent teaching position at the School, where he remained for thirty years. He also began a long career coaching field hockey teams at this time. From 1974 to 1976, Lance was deeply committed to preparation to play field hockey in the 1976 Olympics to be played in Montreal. He played for British Columbia in the Canadian National Field Hockey Tournament in 1974. He toured with the Canadian team to Australia and New Zealand in 1975, and played for Canada in the Pan-American Games in Mexico the same year, after which he and Nancy moved their home to Richmond. In May-June, 1976, having been selected to play for Canada’s Olympic Team, he played on its European Tour. At the Montreal Olympics, with some bad luck and dubious officiating, the team finished 10th, but everything considered acquitted itself very well. Back home, Lance immersed himself by taking on coaching the Richmond Field Hockey Club’s team slated to play in the Vancouver Men’s League. Thus began a long career coaching Richmond teams and holding office in the Club, which was established in 1977. In the 1980s, he was instrumental in the formation of the women’s team, the Richmond Rebels Master’s Team, soon followed by a vibrant junior girls program highlighted by the extraordinary play of the Eagles, which he coached with Nancy. The Eagles went undefeated in league play and won the gold medal at the Provincial Club championship from 1994 to 1999. Lance helped build and develop the Richmond Field Hockey Club with roles as coach and holding executive office. He also served on several Richmond bodies related to the sporting community, such as the Sports Council. In 2023 he completed an extensive account of his life and his career in field hockey, “Together Everyone Achieves More: A Memoir.”
