History / Biographical:
Graham Elliston was born in 1934 in Gibraltar. The family lived in Jamaica, Montreal, Victoria and Peru before settling in Bamfield where he spent his early school years. He attended the University of British Columbia before receiving a Masters Degree in Library Science at the University of Washington at Seattle. In 1970 he married Ilsa Gravitis. He worked for nearly 30 years as a librarian at the University of British Columbia, retiring in 1994 in the year before his death. Mr. Elliston is reported to have loved the ocean and always had a interest in wooden fishing boats. He pursued this avocation by photographing vessels in fishing harbours on the west coast. Many pictures were taken at Bamfield on the west coast of Vancouver Island where he and his wife and children spent summer holidays. The era in which the images were obtained was one of growth and expansion in the west coast fishing industry with the construction of many new fishing vessels taking place.
Custodial History:
The City of Richmond Archives acquired the Graham Elliston fonds by donation in February of 1998. The photographs were given to the Archives following Mr. Elliston's death.
