History / Biographical:
Carl Grauer was born on December 4, 1917. Carl was a member of the pioneer Grauer family and grew up on Sea Island. His father was Rudy Grauer the longest serving Reeve in Richmond’s history. During WWII Carl served for 5 years in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. He married his wife Beverley in Victoria while on leave in 1941 and the couple settled and raised their family on Sea Island. He ran the landmark Grauer Store with his brother Lester until the business was expropriated to make way for the Arthur Laing Bridge in 1977. Carl excelled as a Lacrosse player and served as the Vice President of the BC Lacrosse Association, President of the BC Inner City Lacrosse League, and Chairman of the Selection Committee. Like his father, he was inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Carl passed away on March 20, 2008.
Custodial History:
The records were donated to the archives in two accessions. In 1992 Carl Grauer donated records that pertained to his father, Rudy. The records of the 2008 accession were part of the estate of Carl Grauer and in his custody until his death March 20, 2008. Mr. Grauer directed in his will that the material be given to the City of Richmond Archives after his death. His son Jack arranged for the transfer of the records.
